APPOINTMENTS WITH DESTINY
THE STORY OF DR T.Y. RAHEEM
The gathering of the people from all walks of life to celebrate Dr Toyosi Yekeen Raheem at Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) on the 17th November 2022 was a memory that will linger on.
The get-together was to celebrate the 60th birthday of a Medical Laboratory Science icon, the former Chairman of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) Lagos Branch and also Past National President of AMLSN.
Though, he clocked the diamond age on the 15th November 2022.
The Chairman of the occasion, Dr Jide Idris, former commissioner of health in Lagos State, extolled the qualities of the celebrant and commended him for his resilience.
The book written by the celebrant titled “Appointments with Destiny” (The Autobiography of TYR) was reviewed by Mr Doyin Dada, a retired NTA Staff.
The book clearly showed how hard work, humility, trust, commitment, focus, strong belief in God and other virtues can be ingredients and enablers for one’s Appointments with Destiny.
Professor B.L. Salako, the Director-General of Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) who also presented the book, told the audience that Dr T.Y. Raheem has been an asset to the Institute. He said the administrative prowess of the celebrant changed his department from money gulping to money generating unit. He added that TYR is a Unionist who followed the rules and regulations of the Institute.
In his response, Dr T.Y. Raheem became emotional when he led the guests to his early life. He emphasized that it was just his appointments with destiny that made him what we all witnessed on the day. According to him, his father did not believe he must go to school to succeed. That informed his daddy’s decision to put him in a Mechanic workshop as a mechanic apprentice.
TYR said his inability to identify any of the mechanic tools, despite tool sizes written on them and that made him to decide to go to school. He reported that he realized at that early life that nothing significant could be achieved in life without western education. To him, that was the bedrock of any success in life.
He went further that another appointment with destiny was the termination of his employment with the University College Hospital without any known reason. He did not see the action as divine intervention until he got a new employment in NIMR which subsequently became a base for him to optimize his career.
He thanked his wife, Alhaja Nurat Adebola Raheem, his children, the people of Iseyin, his primary and secondary school mates, his professional colleagues and the staff of NIMR for the massive turn-out to celebrate the Diamond Age with him.

Akinwale- Deputy Director General, NIMR, The National Auditor of AMLSN- Alhaji Kabiru Adamu from Zamfara State, Alhaja Afolabi Adeola (Retired CMLS, Lagos State), Dr Oyinwola Azeez Oni of Nazo Diagnostic, AMLSN National 2nd VP (SW) Mr Femi Adebo, National Publicity Secretary of AMLSN- Mr Olusoji Billyrose from Abuja, AMLSN National Secretary, Prof Musa Abidemi Muhibi from Edo University, Iyamho, AMLSN Kaduna State Branch Chairman – Mr. Lawal Taofeek Babsalam, AMLSN Lagos State Chairman, Mr Olumide Fadipe, Dr Jamiu Ogunbanwo from Australia, Prof Sam Awolola from the US and Chairman GMLD, Lagos State- Mr Adekoya Abimbola Julius.
