 AWOSANYA: AN ARDENT RADIOLOGISTS’ TRAINER, MENTOR

Professor Awosanya Gbadebo Olusegun Gbolahan, born in 1951, is a consultant radiologist, who has made his mark in the field of radio diagnosis. He is both a teacher and mentor of many people in his field.

He attended Ijebu Ode Grammar School, Ogun State, between 1964 and 1970, before moving to College of Medicine, University of Lagos, graduating with Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1977.

He cut his teeth in medical service as a surgeon at General Hospital, Lagos (1977); an obstetrician at Lagos Island Maternity Hospital (1977-1978); physician, General Hospital, Lagos; paediatrician, The Massey Street Children Hospital, Lagos (1978); medical officer, Gombe General Hospital, Gombe, Bauchi State during 1978-1979 national youth service year.

Awosanya rose to become a radiology fellow of the prestigious National Postgraduate College  of Nigeria  (1988), West Africa College of Surgeon (2004) and International College of Surgeon (2007).

A pioneer member of Breast Imaging in Nigeria at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi Araba in 1985, Awosanya also served as member, Academic Board, College of Medicine (1991-2009); board member, Federal School of Radiography, Yaba (1991-1997); president, West African Medical Ultrasound Society (2005-2007); president, Radiologists of West Africa (2007-2009); member, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Management Board (2012-2016); provost, College of Medicine LASUTH (2014-2016); member, Governing Council, Lagos State University, Ojo (2014 till date, as well as cadet commander, LASUTH College of Medicine Naval Cadet Corps (2014-2016)

An ardent trainer and mentor of over 101 Radiologists across the globe, Awosanya is also a member of Association of Radiologist in Nigeria, member  Pan African Congress of Radiologists; member, World Congress of Neuro-radiologists, and member, Radiological Society of North America.
