THE DEATHS IN THE ELEVATORS
The death of late Dr Vwaere Diaso, on Tuesday August 1 2023 at the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island after an elevator she took crashed was one death too many.
How do we quantify this loss as a country? How can the family be consoled?
Am I the only one thinking that this type of incidence are common in the government establishment?
Do you remember an employee of the Odi Olowo Local Council Development Area in Lagos State, Fatai Olalekan Odeniyi that died after falling off from the elevator at WAEC Building in Lagos in 2012?
It was also reported that one person died while three others were injured as the Cocoa House elevator of the 25 stories building collapsed sometime in 2021.
The story of how Adaobi Enechukwu, Annunciator, a native of Adazi Nnukwu died in an elevator in a hotel in Asaba in November 5th 2020 is still fresh in our minds.
All these incidence are pointers to the fact that the government should put in place a structure to check these preventable deaths. An agency should be set up to accredit, monitor and certify the installations, use and maintenance of the elevators in the state and in the country at large.
This is the time for sober reflection as we have lost one of our future hopes. Let the Lagos State Government focus on the renovations of the structures in their establishments. The elevators at the Ministry of Health block and many others are calling attention. We should not wait to sacrifice a person before committees are set up to look into the remote and immediate causes of an incidence.
Besides, those responsible for the maintenance of the elevator in General Hospital Odan Lagos Island should be queried.
Dr Vwaere should have been saved if those concerned have been very proactive. Where do we run to if there is death in the hospital?
We need to cry for the living to stay alive than crying for death we should have stopped from dying.
