GMLD LAGOS NEW EXECUTIVES SET TO SERVE THE MEMBERS
The newly elected executive Officers of the Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors (GMLD) Lagos Branch have indeed started the journey to serve the members of the association meritoriously.
The State Executive Officers (SEOs) of GMLD, Lagos State comprises of Adekoya Abimbola Julius (Chairman), Mrs Mark Doris Chinello Callistus (Vice Chairman), Dr Leo Aniakor (Secretary General), Mr Ikechukwu Unamba (Assistant General Secretary), Mr Faleye Emmanuel Oluleye (Financial Secretary), Mrs Ojo Adedayo (Treasurer), Mr Chris Ubi (Publicity Secretary), Mrs Nebo Chinwe (Auditor), Mrs Stellamaris Ikegwuonu (the Welfare Officer) and Mr Anorue Chima J (as the ex officio).
The SEOs took the first step with a visit to the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), South West zonal office in Yaba. They were received by the zonal Head, Mr Paulinus Offutalu and his team.
Coincidentally, the former President of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Mr Rubainu Manason was in attendance.
Far reaching issues ranging from the welfare of the members, the speedy issuance of the practicing license, monitoring by MLSCN to protect the profession, the 200m distance between laboratories and accreditation of laboratories were discussed and understood.
Thereafter, the SEOs’ next point of call was the office of the Executive Secretary(ES) of the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) where the ES, Dr (Mrs) Abiola Idowu warmly welcomed the GMLD team. The chairman presented all the issues concerning registration, monitoring and accreditation of laboratory facilities to her and she responded with the promise to see to to all the demands presented, then requesting that GMLD Lagos should be involved in the activities of the agency.
Issues of some reported cases of Pharmacists that are illegally running in- house laboratories that are not registered were also raised by the team. She responded that a prompt action will be taken with a view to redress such anomaly. She equally warned against a situations where members of the association will be accomplices in this illegal activities.
The Executive Secretary of HEFAMAA also responded on issues of LAWMA by promising that there is a pathway to resolve the LAWMA issues at the moment. She appealed for patience and kind cooperation from all and commended the Honourable Commissioner of Health, Prof Akin Abayomi for his interest in bringing an amicable solution to this problem. Other member of HEFAMAA management present in the meeting were Dr Godswill Iboma, Dr Daniel Olayinka and several management officers
Furthermore, the meeting of the SEOs with the Executive Secretary of Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service LSBTS, Dr (Mrs) Bodunrin Osikomaya took place. Far reaching issues concerning private practitioners were discussed and the meeting with ES, LSBTS was another memorable occasion.
The ES was excited to host the SEO’s team.
At the meeting the Chairman of GMLD Lagos made the intention of his team clear to her as far as our members welfare was concerned. He acknowledged that the smooth operation of blood banks in Lagos and the welfare of the operators are parts of the mandates of the association. He stressed the point that “all BBSN members are GMLD members but not all GMLD members are BBSN members”
In her response, she promised to work with GMLD in the areas of advocacy, monitoring and policy making for the purpose of improvement in the service delivery.
She advised that those members who are not operating blood Banking should stay away from the service.
The Chairman of Blood Bank Society of Nigeria (BBSN), Mr Thomas Fabunmi was in attendance and he added that the new relationship between the agency and GMLD is a positive step in the right time.
Subsequently, the GMLD SEOs had time to build capacity in leadership through training, strategic plan, set timelines to plans during the retreat. Members were reminded of the leadership responsibilities in their care.
In attendance at the retreat were the National President of GMLD, Prince Elochukwu Adibo who also was the Special Guest of Honour, we had Mr Yemi Abioye , AMLSN Lagos first Vice Chairman who represented the Chairman, Mr Olumide Fadipe, Mr Kelvin Agbelusi, the Secretary General of AMLSN Lagos and former Chairman of GMLD, Mr Onaneye Olumuyiwa and the immediate past Secretary General, Mr Igwe Akujuobi were all present at the one-day event.
The LOC chairman of the retreat, Mr Ikechukwu Unamba informed the participants that the communique of the retreat will soon be made public.
