The words of God in the book of Hosea 4:6 that ‘my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge’’ can be used to describe the belief among some Christians that undergoing ultrasound scan is tantamount to unearthing the works of God. I was present in a clinic where a patient was arguing with her Doctor on why she should subject herself to ultrasound examinations. I got the attention of this would-be mother who explained that it was not Christian-like to probe into the works of Almighty God, the Omniscient. I told her that the same God, who made the world and all things therein, the Lord of heaven and earth who giveth to all life and breath and all things, is the first SONOLOGIST.

A Sonologist is a physician who performs or interprets the readings of the ultrasound. Ultrasound can be used to examine many parts of the body such as the abdomen, breast, female reproductive system, prostate, heart and blood vessels. In pregnancy it is used to study the age, number, weight, sex, location and activity of the foetus. It can be used to detect foetus with bigger than normal head (Hydrocephalous), foetus without head (an cephalous), foetus with defect (Down syndrome) and conjoin twins.

Sex prediction, though, the least function of the ultrasound scan is not done with the aim to playing God. It is rather to give the parents the room to plan and equally guide them during the shopping.

In Gen 16:11 the sex of Ishmael was predicted to Abraham by God who also in Gen 18:10 told the father of faith ‘I will certainly return to you according to the time of life and Sarah your wife shall have a son’

The Almighty God told the mother of Samson the sex of the foetus, the type of diet suited for her during pregnancy and that razor should not be included in her shopping list as in the book of Judges 13:3-5 that ‘ you are sterile and childless but you are going to conceive and have a son. Now see to it that you drink no wine, or other fermented drink and that you do not eat anything unclean because you will conceive and give birth to a son. No razor may be used on his head because the baby is to be a Nazirite’.

Besides, God in 1 king 13: 2 said ‘a son named Josiah will be born to the house of David’. In the same way the sexes of John the Baptist and our Lord Jesus Christ were predicted.

Furthermore, ultrasound scan can be used to calm the nerve of the pregnant woman, to predict the number and the viability of the fetus as recorded in Gen 25:22-23 “The babies jostled each other within her and she said “why is this happening to me” so she went to inquired of the lord, the lord said to her “Two nations are in your womb and two people from within you will be separated, one people will be stronger than the other and the older will serve the younger” This statement can be translated into a modern day ultrasound language as “there are viable twice gestation with one more active than the other”. Henceforth, is God not a SONOLOGIST?

Though, God in His infinite power did not use ultrasound machine just as He did not use anesthetic or surgical instrument to perform the first operation on our forefather, Adam.

On the contrary, those incidences that were not scanned or predicted by God recorded some complications because ultrasound reveals ahead the likely complications and alerts the Doctors or Midwives on what to expect. The life of Rachael would have been saved or the complication experienced by Racheal during the delivery of Benjamin would have been avoided if the ultrasound examination was available to guide the Midwife as recorded in Gen 35:16-17 “then they moved on from bethel while they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachael began to give birth and had great difficulty. And as she was having great difficulty in child birth, the midwife said to her “Don’t be afraid for you have another son as she breathed her last”

Nevertheless, ultrasound examination would have guided the midwife who took the delivery of the twin of Tamar the daughter in-law of Judah who has twins in Gen 38:27-30 “when the time came for her to give birth there were twin boys in her womb as she was giving birth one of them put out his hand so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said “this one came out first but when he drew back his hand, his brother came out”.

Lastly, our religious leaders and the government at all levels should pay more attention to the education of our people so as to disabuse their mind against this type of erroneous belief. Our people should learn from the words of Arthur Schopenhauer that “The greatest mistake a man can make is to sacrifice health for any other advantage” Psalm 84:11 says “No good things will He withhold from them that walk uprightly” and therefore ultrasound is one of the good things of God.
