IDRIS: A DEDICATED LIFE SERVICE TO HUMANITY

Idris A Saliu, a Fellow of Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (FMLSCN), specialised in haematology/blood transfusion science and virology. He is also a Fellow of the West Africa Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science (WAPCMLS). 

He started his career at Nigerian Institute for Trypanosomiasis Research (NITR), Kaduna (1968-1973), from where he moved to University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan (1973-1974) and later to College of Medicine University of Ibadan (1974-2004), where he retired as Chief Medical Laboratory Scientist.

Idris also worked with Crown Agents as its training programme coordinator in the implementation of the UK Department for International Developments (DFID) intervention project on Institutional Strengthening and Capacity Building in HIV Testing for Blood Safety in Nigeria from 1999 to 2002. Idris enjoys teaching blood transfusion science. He is the Country Director of Safe Blood for Africa Foundation (SBFAF) in Nigeria.

He was a member of NBTS Technical Advisory Committee and National HIV/AIDS Surveillance Study group of National AIDS Control Programme for seven years. He was MLSCN board member between 2000 and 2003 as well as a member of Lagos State Blood Transfusion Committee.

A Sessional Consultant to Family Health International (FHI) between 2002 and 2004, Idris was also a consultant to Partnership for Transformation of Health Services (PATHS) project in Enugu between 2003 and 2004.

Idris co-authored a WHO-BIO-Safety Guidelines for Laboratory Staff and other Health Workers in Contact with Dangerous Pathogens with Emphasis on HIV. He has over 26 publications in both local and international journals. Expectedly, Idris’ contributions to blood transfusion science/medicine did not go unnoticed. He received awards for his service to humanity from Othro Diagnostic in1980 and Nigerian Society for Haematology and Blood Transfusion (NSHBT) in 2013 and 2014.

He is a Member of the following organisations:

Africa Society for Blood Transfusion (AfSBT) Served on the Education Committee from 2012 to 2016,

International Society for Blood Transfusion (ISBT),

American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) 

International Society for Laboratory Heamatology (ISLH).
