The peculiar features of this year’s joint annual seminar organised by Ikeja Chapter and Agege-Ifako-Ijaye Chapter of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Lagos State stand out as a classical model of Unity, collaboration and teamwork among chapters for others to emulate.

The choice of the seminar venue was a modest serene Chemline Training Centre in the heart of Ikeja, a highly respectable suburb that is accessible to virtually all parts of Lagos metropolis. The event took place on Thursday 17th June, 2021 under the Chairmanship of the Eze Ndi Igbo I of Ojodu and the MD/CEO of Kowa Medical Laboratory Nig. Limited., Chief Augustine Ebisi,

The program was well attended by the cream of the crop of Medical Laboratory practitioners in Lagos State. The welcome addresses were co-delivered by the Chairmen of both chapters, Ikeja Chapter chairman – Mrs Audu Habibat and Agege Ifako Ijaye chapter Chairman Mrs Gloria Raji. This collaboration in seminar planning and delivery was an exceptional demonstration of how-to manage diversity through teamwork, synergy of resources, unity and innovation between the two partnering chapters to achieve a collective goal and purpose.

The choice of the Keynote theme, “Emerging and re-emerging diseases: Perusing the African Enigma in Covid 19 pandemic” was pertinent and justifiable. The same goes to the choice of other speakers. This include Dr Caleb Adegoke of Med. Lab. Science department, Ogun State College of Health Technology delivered a lecture on “Probiotics Potential of Lactic Acid Bacteria (Lab) as a Therapy against Aeromonas Spp. Isolated from Diverse Sources in Ibadan”, Mrs Nonye Umahi, Managing Consultant , CUANU Resources and Technical Services Ltd. also delivered lecture on “Entrepreneurial Mindset for the Present Economy” and Mr Offutalu Paulinus, the Southwest Zonal Coordinator and Lab Manager, Public Health In-Vitro Diagnostic Control Lab, delivered “Role of MLSCN in curbing the Covid 19 Pandemic in Nigeria”.

There was a special award ceremony session in the event to recognize the efforts of some important dignitaries towards the development of the profession.

The awardees included Engr. Mojeed Balogun, Eze Austin Ebisi, Kehinde Wojuade, Abiodun Hazmat, Olusola Ibikunle ,Dr Romanus Okafor and Prof Kola Oyedeji

In addition, there was something about the seminar that is worthy of note, that also caught my attention, that was the presence of many AMLSN Chapter Chairmen (Lagos Island, NIMR, Ajegunle, Suru Lere, Shomolu, Alimosho and Festac) at the event who were invited in the spirit of one family, one love. It is also heartwarming too that the Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors (GMLD), Lagos State branch and AMLSN Lagos State representatives also graced the occasion with their presence.

Indeed, in all intent and purpose this Co-hosted seminar by the two chapters was a huge success and is a true illustration of the saying that “whatever men can do, women can do better” and certainly there is a lot we all can learn from this in managing our diversity as Medical Laboratory scientists in the face of daunting task and challenges that we must confront going forward.
