The conference organized by the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) South- West Forum (ASWEF) had people from all walks of life. The first biennial Scientific Conference/ Workshop and the Annual General Meeting was held on 7TH October, 2021, at hall 36 LAGOS UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL, LUTH, LAGOS STATE NIGERIA.

The communique issued at the end of the meeting is as shown below.

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED BY THE ASSOCIATION OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTISTS OF NIGERIA (AMLSN) SOUTH-WEST FORUM (ASWEF) AT THE END OF HER 1ST  BIENNIAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE/WORKSHOP AND ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (AGM) HELD BETWEEN 6TH  AND 7TH  OCTOBER, 2021, AT HALL 36 LAGOS UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL, LUTH, LAGOS STATE NIGERIA. 

The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria South West Forum held its 1st Biennial Scientific Conference/Workshop with the theme Relevance of Medical Laboratory Scientists in Nation Building (Health, Economic, Technological & Security Impacts)”

 The Chairman of the occasion was Hon. Justice Olatokunbo Olayinka Majekodunmi, FCIArb, MICMC, (Judge of Ogun State High Court)

The Keynote Address on the theme was delivered by Hon. MLS Akinloye Ajibola (Fmr House Committee Vice Chairman on Health, Osun State)

The Conference was declared open by the Hon. Justice Olatokunbo Olayinka Majekodunmi  

GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF THE CONFERENCE

To assess the Relevance of Medical Laboratory Scientists in Nation Building and National Development.

To examine the input of Medical Laboratory Scientists and Medical laboratory Science practice in other critical sectors of the economy apart from the health sector.

To articulate strategies and roadmap for inclusion and utilization of Medical laboratory Science professionals in management of Health, Economic, Technological and Security sectors of Nigerian economy.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE CONFERENCE

To particularly assess the relevance and input of Medical Laboratory Science in development of National Security System.

To assess the causes of inter-professional rivalry in the health sector with a view to proffering solutions to avoid and overcome them

To Evaluate Medical Laboratory preparedness towards prevention and curbing of Bio-terrorism.

To evaluate the prospect of Medical Laboratory Science practitioners in the National Health Insurance (NHIS) Scheme. 

To assess the vulnerability and protection of Medical Laboratory Science Practitioners within the legal framework.

To examine issues bothering on ethics and etiquette in Medical laboratory Science practice.

To assess the burden of infectious diseases due to unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene. 

OBSERVATIONS/DELIBRATIONS

  1. The Conference eulogizes the leadership of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) at the national level for the initiative of the birth of the zonal fora in the country which is meant to further galvanize ideas for development of medical laboratory science mandate.
  • The Conference commends the effort of AMLSN members for the roles they are playing as frontline workers in the heath sector and congratulate members as worthy survivors of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a charge not to lose guard yet as the pandemic is still ravaging.
  • Conference lauds the participation of medical laboratory scientists in healthcare delivery in Nigeria and calls for more involvement in major critical sectors of the economy.
  • Conference recognizes and emphasizes the key roles of medical laboratory science practice in healthcare delivery as a major component of human and economic development, hence the need for engagement of practitioners in national development plan and implementation.
  • Conference acknowledges that the time to brace up and prepare for more vibrant, impactful and fulfilling Medical Laboratory Science practice in our country is now, however, as the practice carries high risk due to the potential exposure to health hazards, hence physical, psychological, social and financial protection mechanisms should be in place to mitigate loses and vulnerabilities.
  • Conference charges all tiers of government to step up efforts to improve water, sanitation and hygiene; noting that availability of safe water, institutionalization of community-based sanitation policies will naturally improve personal and community hygiene thereby scaling down on prevalence of infectious and communicable diseases in rural areas
  • Conference calls on the National Assembly to be conscious of existing laws establishing various professional regulatory bodies and avoid duplicating same roles in for the numerous body seeking professional recognition as this will trigger and escalate industrial unrest, especially in the fragile health sector
  • Conference further charges various committees set up by the federal government to resolve inter-professional acrimonies in the health sector to work with sincerity of purpose to achieve desirable and unbiased outcome needed to achieve functional and effective healthcare delivery system in Nigeria.
  • Conference affirms that Medical Laboratory Scientists must play key roles in combating bioterrorism with prompt interventions through prevention, protection, prophylaxis, post-exposure treatment and early mitigation and containment of any bio agent.
