SCIENTISTS IN LAGOS STRATEGIZE FOR ACCREDITATION FOR ALL LABORATORIES BY THE YEAR 2025.

This year’s two-day business and laboratory capacity building workshop organized by the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) FESTAC/Satellite chapter in conjunction with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) took place with a difference. The event took place on the 28th and 29th April, 2022 at the exotic Rockview Hotel and suites, Festac Town, Lagos. The event gathered Medical Laboratory scientists, Interns, Researchers, Vendors, Business executives, Auditors, policy makers within and outside Lagos State with a targeted aim at achieving SLAMTA/SLIPTA or ISO15189 accreditation for improved laboratory practice in Nigeria.

The Chairman of the occasion, who incidentally was a past President of AMLSN, Dr Toyosi Raheem, expressed delight over the massive contributions the chapter was making to the profession. He recalled the roles he played during the formative stage of the chapter. He also commended the efforts of successive past Chairmen in nurturing the Chapter to the such an enviable and glorious height.

The Chairman of the chapter, Mr Vincent. O. Iwunze, in his opening speech acknowledged that the chapter is known for her reputation for showing commitment in the advancement of best practices in the Medical Laboratory towards enhancement of quality service delivery. He reminded the participants that the last year’s theme ” Merger and Acquisition of Laboratories for Strategic Growth” was delivered by the Registrar of MLSCN, Dr Tosan Erhabor. Hence, according to him, this year’s event was like a booster to the previous episode.

This year’s theme ” Accreditation For All Medical Laboratory By The Year 2025: Preparedness, Problems and Strategies” was delivered by the former President of AMLSN, former Registrar of the MLSCN, Member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on In-vitro Diagnostic (SAAGE-IVD), Prof Emeribe Anthony.

Prof Emeribe, in his lecture, posited that accreditation of laboratories will improve the facilitation of accurate and rapid diagnosis, efficiency of treatment, and reduction of errors in the laboratory process.

The former Registrar further stated that ” Accreditation is not about who the best is but who has a system of standard procedure with the aim to improve the quality and the patient safety.

Other guest speakers that presented lectures at the event included the Deputy Registrar & Director of Accreditation, MLSCN- Dr Lawrena Okoro. She delivered a presentation on ” Overview of ISO 15189 Standard Management and Technical Requirements”

The South- West Zonal Head, MLSCN & Laboratory Manager, of the MLSCN IVD Lab in Lagos, Mr Paulinus Offutalu, also presented a paper at the event on ” Quality Control and Proper Maintenance of Clinical Laboratory Equipment”. Another topic on “Quality System Essential: Equipment, Key Requirement in attaining ISO 15189 Accreditation” was delivered by a versatile QMS consultant – Mrs Nonye Umahi. Adejumobi Abiola, who addressed the participants on “Equipment selection, Acquisition Process for the Purpose of Quality Service Delivery.

“Leadership and Management in Medical Laboratory Practice in Building Capacity, Improve Quality System Operatibilty and Preparedness Towards Accreditation” was delivered by a Leadership Consultant from Lagos State University, Prof Odewunmi Samuel Gbadebo.

Other dignitaries who dignified the event with their presence included Dr(Prince) Elochukwu Adibo, the National President of GMLD, the Chairman, AMLSN Lagos Branch, Olumide Fadipe, the Chairman, GMLD Lagos Branch, Adekoya Abimbola Julius, the chairman, BBSN, Lagos State branch – Fabunmi Thomas, the Chairperson AFMLSN, Lagos State branch – Mrs Faith Itua, the Royal father (Eze ndi Igbo of Ojodu)/MD/CEO, Kowa Laboratory, HRH Chief Ebisi Augustine, the head of department of Medical Laboratory Science of college of Medicine University of Lagos, Prof M. T. Niemogha.

Lastly, the Chairman and the Workshop consultant of the workshop planning committee, Anayo Chidobu and Igwe Akujuobi respectively were full of appreciation to the invited guests and the participants for making the event epoch.
